What can you send to a soldier at basic?

My boyfriend is at fort benning GA and i dont know if they go through mail or not and what all he's a loud to have, but his birthday is coming up and i got him a gold chain with a cross would i be able to mail that to him or should i just wait to give it to him? thanks
