Is Columbus, Georgia safe?

I'm staying there for 5 days next month, and I've never been out of California before. I'm staying at a hotel by Columbus State University. But I'm scared to be going to another state, especially since I don't know the surrounding area or anyone there but the people i'm traveling with. I'm going because of my brother Family Day at Fort Benning. So, am I just being overly paranoid? Is Columbus safe?
