Need a quick answer? Fort Benning, Georgia?

I'm going to Ft. Benning for family day next month. I was wondering, what can I expect? Do I need to bring anything and how should I dress? Also, is Fort Benning and the surrounding area safe? I don't live anywhere near Georgia so I'm not really sure how safe it is there. Sorry, I'm totally paranoid about these types of things, so I really have to know about the safety; I'm going to be going by myself and I'm kind of scared because I won't know anyone or where to go/not go there. So, help please?
